SPACE ROCKS FOUND

Meteorite hunters have found fragments of the minivan-sized asteroid that exploded over California on April 22nd. Meteorites landed in the vicinity of Sutter's Mill in El Dorado County, CA, the same place gold was discovered in 1848, triggering the California Gold Rush. Astronomers plan to study the fragments to learn more about the asteroid, specificially its composition and origin.

What We Still Don't Know - Why Are We Here (Episode 2)

The Universe is still a place of mystery and wonder. As a cosmologist, I am exhilarated that we can make some progress towards tackling what seem very fundamental questions.

These programs focus on: Was there a beginning? Whether we are alone? What's the future of the cosmos?

What is the nature of reality? With each advance, new questions come into sharper focus. The key issue is what we still don't know.

Why Are We Here?

Everything you thought you knew about the universe is wrong. It's made of atoms, right? Wrong. Atoms only account for a measly 15% of everything that exists. The mass of the universe consists of something so mysterious and elusive that it has been dubbed 'dark matter'.

What We Still Don't Know - Are We Alone (Episode 1)

The Universe is still a place of mystery and wonder. As a cosmologist, I am exhilarated that we can make some progress towards tackling what seem very fundamental questions.

Are we alone?

Sir Martin explores the possibility that life exists on planets beyond our own. He unveils an unsettling scientific debate that has startling consequences for us Earthlings. Do you believe in aliens? If not, a quick glance through these pages might change your mind!

The Time Lords - Documentary

Produced in 1996, this documentary from the BBC is digs deep into time travel and explores the physics behind wormholes. Is this even possible? Are there attempts to disprove or confirm the theories?

Time Lords is also an introduction about the idea of wormholes to someone who have little idea of what this is about. The documentary features interviews with Stephen Hawking, Kip Thorne, John A. Wheeler and Carl Sagan.

The series was rebroadcast in 1999 with the title "Time Travel" on PBS.

Journey to the Edge of the Universe - Documentary

National Geographic presents the first accurate non-stop voyage from Earth to the edge of the Universe using a single, unbroken shot through the use of spectacular CGI (Computer-Generated Imagery) technology.

Building on images taken from the Hubble telescope, Journey to the Edge of the Universe explores the science and history behind the distant celestial bodies in the solar system.

This spectacular, epic voyage across the cosmos, takes us from the Earth, past the Moon and our neighboring planets, out of our Solar System, to the nearest stars, nebulae and galaxies and beyond -- right to the edge of the Universe itself.

When you finish this video, you will walk away from it with an awareness that you never had before, of the unseen astronomically massive universe that we float around on like a spec of dust in the ocean.

This video takes you on a journey through the universe as if you are watching a Sci Fi adventure. Yet you constantly have to remind yourself that what you're seeing is really out there.

Big Bang in Tunguska (Documentary on the mysterious 1908 explosion) - Do...

June 30th was the 100th anniversary of the Tunguska blast in Siberia. (Google for "Tunguska Event" as there is far too much material to link here...) General estimates of the blast put it at 10 to 15 megatons (though some now argue 3 to 5 megatons), or about 1,000 times the Hiroshima detonation. 830 square miles of trees were flattened. Windows shattered 250 miles from the blast center. The fluctuations in air pressure were measured in England, thousands of miles away.

In short, it was one hell of a bang.

No crater was left behind, making it likely that it was a meteor or asteroid, maybe even a small comet burst in mid air.

The problem is, aside from tree damage, we have no physical evidence of the "object", if there really was one. Basically, we don't have a clue at this point, but it's fun to speculate. You can certainly spend hours reading every take on it.

BBC Horizon Project Poltergeist (Missing Neutrinos) - Full Documentary

This is the story of two genuine scientific heroes. For forty years, John Bahcall and Ray Davis were engaged in a single extraordinary experiment - to find out why the Sun shines. In the end they would triumph. Davis would win the Nobel Prize and, thanks to their work, a whole new theory about how the universe is put together may have to be created.

At the heart of this story is a tiny, utterly mysterious thing called a neutrino. Trillions of them pass through your body every second, touching nothing, leaving no trace. Yet neutrinos are one of a handful of fundamental particles in the universe, essential to every atom in existence and clues to what makes the Sun work. But their ghost-like quality made trapping and understanding them immensely difficult.

What then followed was a bizarre series of experiments. They led from a vat containing 600 tons of cleaning fluid, to a vast cavern in a Japanese mountain, to a hole in the ground in Canada two kilometres deep.

What they would reveal would stun the world of science. It seems that neutrinos may be our parents. They may be the reason why everything, including us, exists.
